- Psallam Spiritu et Mente -
I will sing with the Spirit and with understanding.
— 1 Corinthians 14:15

The Bethany Lutheran Schola Cantorum (“the Schola Cantorum”) exists to give young musicians an exceptional musical experience in the context of the church’s liturgical life.  We believe that every person is inherently musical, and we are committed to cultivating well-educated lifelong musicians who will use this gift to the glory of God, service to their neighbor, and personal enjoyment.  In addition to musical growth, choristers grow personally and spiritually as they develop self-discipline, a sense of responsibility and commitment, and an understanding of the importance of collaborating with, serving, and encouraging others.  This is why we often refer to it as the Ultimate Team Sport.

The program is divided into three choirs based on age and voice type: The Preparatory Choir (grades K-2), The Choristers (Grades 3-8), and The Choir of Young Men & Women (Grades 9-12, or by appointment).  Enrollment in The Choristers and The Choir of Young Men & Women is limited to 25 choristers in order to ensure an adequate amount of personal mentoring. There is no tuition charged for participating in the program.  The only requirements for prospective choristers are 1) a commitment to the rehearsal and service schedule, and 2) the ability to match pitch (not applicable to The Preparatory Choir).  Regardless of faith tradition or association with Bethany Lutheran Church, we warmly welcome any child or youth from Naperville and the surrounding to enroll in this truly unique experience.

The Preparatory Choir is an informal environment in which young choristers are taught the very basics of healthy singing, music literacy, and liturgical formation through simple songs and hymnody.  These concepts are reinforced through repetition throughout the year. Preparatory Choristers will learn:

  • how to stand and sit with good posture
  • how to breathe properly
  • how to match pitch
  • the difference between head and chest voice
  • singing with good articulation and vowels (diction)
  • placement and resonance
  • how to project while singing
  • how to be expressive in their singing
  • how to feel a steady beat
  • how to feel rhythm in groups of 2s and 3s
  • how to sing back short melodies
  • how to clap back short rhythmic patterns
  • basic musical and liturgical terminology
  • basic concepts of liturgy
  • the Chorister’s Prayer

Additionally, Choristers receive a modest Choral Scholarship according to their rank to reward them for their work.
