interim assistant conductor, Naperville youth symphony orchestra (NYSO)
Mr. Gross grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and began studying the violin at the age of 11 in the public schools. At age 14 he began studying privately with Ms. Karin Hallberg through the Northern Arizona University Preparatory School for the Performing Arts. During that time he also played in his local youth orchestra, the Flagstaff Youth Orchestra.
After graduating high school Mr. Gross attended the University of Northern Arizona where he studied violin with Dr. Louise Scott, the concertmaster of both the Arizona Opera and the Flagstaff Symphony. Additionally, he studied conducting with the Director of Orchestras, Victor Liva, ultimately receiving a Bachelor’s degree in violin performance.
In 2000, he turned his attention to conducting, attending the University of South Carolina where he earned a Master’s Degree in instrumental conducting under the direction maestro Donald Portnoy. He also continued his violin studies with violinist and concertmaster of the Augusta symphony, Ryan Kho.
After Graduate school Mr. Gross completed a second Bachelors in Music Education, while also serving as the assistant conductor of the NAU orchestras. During that time, Mr. Gross made his conducting debut with the NAU opera orchestra in a full-scale production of The Marriage of Figaro by W.A. Mozart.
After finishing his schooling, Mr. Gross went on to serve as Director of Orchestras for Skyline High School in Mesa Arizona where he happily taught for five years. Over the years Mr. Gross has been a member of over 15 professional orchestras throughout the United States. He also had the opportunity to be the principal violinist of a National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof, playing over 200 performances around the country. He met his future wife on the tour, and moved to Naperville with her three years ago to pursue a life here.
Most recently, Mr. Gross has been appointed as the Director of Orchestras at Naperville Central High School, a position he is thrilled to have and cannot wait to get started. He and his wife Colleen also recently welcomed their first son to the world! Elijah James, was born on January 31st, 2019.
Mr. Gross and his whole family are so grateful for all of the opportunities they have been given here in Naperville, and look forward to making new friends and family with the NYSO and this community.
